Case study:
Artisanal London Dry Gin as a premium corporate gift for CTCS

For CTCS, NewSpirits developed an artisanal London Dry Gin as a premium corporate gift and promotional product for CTCS's spices. In this case study, we demonstrate how the project came to life: from concept, bottle advice, label design, and gift packaging to maceration, distillation, filtration, and bottling by Brouwhoeve Distillery.

The result is a private label gin with a clear story. A gin in which the world of CTCS can literally be smelled and tasted.

The assignment: a gin that tells the story of CTCS

CTCS, led by CEO Ronald Visser, specializes in herbs, spices, and food ingredients. For partners and clients, CTCS wanted to develop a special gift that would be more than just a standard token of appreciation.

The request to NewSpirits was clear: develop a craft London Dry Gin in a striking bottle with high-quality packaging. The gin was to serve as an exclusive corporate gift, but also as a promotion of the spices that CTCS works with daily.

Thus, the project became much more than just producing a bottle of gin. It became a total concept in which taste, aroma, brand experience, packaging, and artisanal production had to come together.

The role of NewSpirits:
from idea to premium spirit concept

NewSpirits led this project and was responsible for the creative and commercial translation of the idea. The goal was to transform CTCS's spices into a complete beverage concept that matches the company's quality and image.

Within the project, NewSpirits provided guidance on

  • the concept development of the gin;

  • the positioning as a premium corporate gift;

  • the bottle advice;

  • the design of the label;

  • the choice of cap and sealing;

  • the development of the gift box;

  • the overall presentation of the final product.

For NewSpirits, a project like this is about more than just the liquid itself.

A successful private label spirit concept must be perfect from the very first moment: the bottle, the label, the packaging, the story, and—of course—the content. Everything must reinforce each other. With this CTCS London Dry Gin, that synergy was particularly vital. The gin had to immediately demonstrate that it was an exclusive, carefully developed product—a gift that partners don't just receive, but truly remember.

The role of CTCS: spices as the basis of the product

An important part of this project was that CTCS supplied the spices themselves. This truly connected the gin to the company and to the products that CTCS stands for.

The botanicals and spices used included:
  • Cubeb pepper
  • Lampung pepper
  • white Muntok pepper
  • star anise
  • nutmeg

  • juniper berry
  • coriander

  • cardamom

  • turmeric

  • lemongrass, also known as sereh

  • galangal / laos
  • Ceylon cinnamon

  • clove

  • Cassia Padang sticks

  • mace, also known as foelie

This combination gives the gin a distinctively spicy character. At the same time, the gin needed to remain dry, clear, and elegant. This required a careful balance between fresh, warm, peppery, and aromatic notes.

The role of Brouwhoeve Distillery:
Artisanal distillation

For the production, NewSpirits collaborated with Brouwhoeve Distillery. Brouwhoeve translated the concept and the provided CTCS spices into an artisanal London Dry Gin.
Distilling a gin with such characterful spices requires true craftsmanship. Some botanicals release their aroma and flavor quickly, while others are incredibly potent and can easily become overpowering—think of cloves, star anise, cassia, nutmeg, and mace.
These ingredients provide depth and warmth, but they must be dosed with extreme precision. Brouwhoeve therefore sought a flavor profile where the juniper remains recognizably present, while the CTCS spices provide distinction, complexity, and a unique signature.

The process began with the selection and preparation of the botanicals.
Each spice has its own function in the gin.

Selection and preparation of the botanicals

The process began with the selection and preparation of the botanicals.
Each spice has its own function in the gin.

Some ingredients provide freshness, others for
warmth, spiciness, body, or length in the aftertaste.

Juniper forms the classic base. Coriander, cardamom, lemongrass, and galangal bring freshness and aromatic tension. Pepper varieties such as cubeb, Lampung, and white Muntok pepper provide dryness, power, and a spicy finish. Warm spices including cassia, Ceylon cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, cloves, and star anise provide depth and roundness.

For the maceration, the botanicals were carefully weighed. Where necessary, spices were lightly crushed or prepared to ensure the aromas could be more effectively released during the process.

Maceration: releasing aromas from the spices

During maceration, the botanicals are placed in alcohol. The alcohol extracts aroma and flavor compounds from the spices and forms the basis for
the later distillate.

In this CTCS gin, maceration was an important step. The gin contains powerful spices with a lot of character. Too little extraction would result in a flat
result. Too much extraction could make the gin heavy or too spicy.

The goal was therefore a controlled maceration: enough strength and complexity, but maintaining balance, freshness, and drinkability.

Distillation: the heart of the gin

After the maceration, the alcohol infused with botanicals was distilled. During the heating process, the alcohol and volatile aromas evaporate. These vapors are then cooled and collected as a crystal-clear distillate.

In artisanal distillation, everything revolves around selecting the heart of the distillation. The "heads" (voorloop) contain unwanted volatile components, while the "tails" (naloop) often carry heavy, unpleasant tones. Only the heart contains the pure, aromatic core of the gin.

For this London Dry Gin, that resulted in a clear and dry distillate in which juniper, coriander, cardamom, lemongrass, pepper, and warm spices come together beautifully.

Resting, diluting, and filtering

After distillation, the gin was given time to rest. This is a crucial step, as it allows the aromas to further integrate. Sharp edges soften, and the various spices harmonize, resulting in a more balanced and cohesive flavor profile.

Afterward, the gin was brought down to the desired alcohol percentage with water. This is also a precise step; dilution directly influences the aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, and clarity of the spirit.

Next, the gin was filtered. Filtration ensures a pure and clear end product, without unnecessarily removing the character of the botanicals.

Bottling and finishing

After approval of the flavor profile, the gin was bottled in the chosen bottle. Then came the label, cap, sealing, and gift packaging.

In this phase, the entire concept came together. The bottle and packaging had to radiate the same level of quality as the gin itself. The final product needed to feel premium, serve as a fitting corporate gift, and be immediately recognizable as a meticulously developed project by CTCS, NewSpirits, and Brouwhoeve.
